Central America is a pretty good place to have a holiday - and that is quite enough reason to go. But we had an additional reason. He is called Alasdair and is my son.
He has recently left the 6th form at his school (Bristol Grammar School) and has got a place at Emmanuel College, Cambridge to read History. But he has no wish to go back to studying straight away and is taking a gap year in Central America. He flew out to Guatemala in mid January 2006, with the intention of coming back in August. Term at Cambridge starts in early October.
We (that's me and my wife Chris) decided that this was a good excuse for us to have a nice holiday and to see Alasdair. We decided to go in February and March, giving the boy a chance to settle into the place before we turned up.
He went out to a Spanish School in Antigua, Guatemala, but by the time we got there he had moved onto more remote places where there were fewer "gringos" and more need to speak Spanish. He is writing a blog which you can read HERE.
Our holiday was a group holiday, arranged by Exodus Travel and led by George James.
We flew from Gatwick to Houston, Texas, and then flew on to Guatemala City.
